Call for articles: Agricultural biodiversity – Breaking the barriers

dineshpanday's avatarAGRICULTURE BLOG.....

Agricultural biodiversity plays a huge role in maintaining resilient local economies, balanced diets and balanced ecosystems. The rapid disappearance of agricultural biodiversity and the lack of measures to protect it are therefore great causes of concern.

Mainstream agricultural policies, which generally promote monoculture agriculture, Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) and Intellectual Property Rights threaten such agricultural biodiversity, having an impact on agricultural landscapes, species, varieties, breeds, the wild relatives of crops and livestock, pollinators, micro-organisms and genes. These policies and practices lead to the disappearance of plant and animal species, and the knowledge embedded in their management and use.

The good news is that in recent years many promising initiatives have been launched around the world that aim to preserve and manage agricultural biodiversity. Small-scale family farmers often play a central role in these, acting as custodians of biodiversity. But other actors and institutions also play important roles. Producers, public and…

Who Feeds the World?

Thought+Food's avatarThought + Food

wheatfield

NPR’s “The Salt”  blog had an interesting piecetoday on a phrase that gets used a lot: the assertion that American farmers “feed the world”.  As often happens, the real fun starts in the comments section. People who have, perhaps never grown anything in their backyard and may have never even visited a farm feel free to weigh in and dispense advice! So, they assert, that American farmers are actually forcing the rest of the world to eat nutritionally poor food grown in a way that is harmful for the environment.

While there is room for improvement, the reality is that most farmers are mindful of the environment and try to grow food in a sustainable way. Of course, big agribusinesses came up for criticism as well. But what was interesting was the perspective of most commentators was so narrow. To a family struggling with drought and famine and unable…

Nigeria: 70% of Agric products rot in transit, AgricNet solutions to the rescue!

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Aviation Matters, Ann Ene-Etta, has outlined the means by which the government is trying to ensure the successful exportation of farm produce through the aviation sector and the Nigerian Fresh Produce Transformation Programme, which would bring an end to the huge wastage experienced in the food sector.

Ene-Etta made this known during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily at the on-going 19th Nigerian Economic Summit which focuses on the agricultural sector.
She disclosed that 70% of farms produce in the country rot before it reaches the consumers, a trend she assured government is working to tackle via the Nigerian Fresh Produce Transformation Programme because “the essence of it, is for us to ensure that we put the processing facilities in place” as well as the storage, refrigeration facilities “which will assist the farmer to preserve produce that is rotting away”.

Transforming smallholder agriculture

canwefeedtheworld's avatarOne Billion Hungry: Can We Feed the World?

Many of the posts on this blog talk about smallholder farmers, commonly characterised as farmers who own or farm plots of land smaller than two hectares. Four-fifths of the developing world’s food is a product of small-sized farms, as estimated by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and yet some 50% of the world’s hungry are smallholders. Because of the size of their landholdings and thus resource base, smallholder farmers are often disproportionately affected by shocks and stresses such as food price volatility, poor health and climate change. They often live in rural areas where links to markets, financial services and information is poor. But given access to such services, smallholder farmers have a great deal of potential to feed themselves, their households and the rest of the world.

ID-10071315Smallholder farmers, however, are not a homogenous group. Some may be largely subsistence while others have the potential to…

UN officials stress link between food security and peace in Sahel

See on Scoop.itAgriculture, Climate & Food security

This article is about the Sahel, but it has relevance for other regions.

“There is a clear linkage between hunger and conflict; food security and peace in Africa…Investing in food security in the Sahel is also an investment in a peaceful and more stable future” [Graziano da Silva, Director General, FAO].  The western part of the Sahel region, which stretches from the Atlantic Ocean to the Red Sea, and includes Chad, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, and parts of Sudan, Cameroon and Nigeria, is currently facing a swathe of problems, which are not only political but also involve security, humanitarian resilience and human rights.

In addition to political instability in Mali, the region suffers from extreme poverty, with human development levels among the lowest in the world, porous borders that present significant security challenges, as well as human rights problems. Added to that is the humanitarian crisis affecting the region this year, in which over 18 million people are estimated to be at risk of food insecurity and over one million children risk severe acute malnutrition.

“It is essential to step up support and also combine short-term humanitarian responses with longer-term development actions…We need to make livelihoods more resilient. And we need to ensure that our interventions in different areas – food security and nutrition, agriculture, health, education and security – are as integrated as possible.”

Food for Thought: Large-Scale Poultry Production Stimulates Cancer

“….a high concentration of new chemicals in poultry production/processing plants may be dangerous ….” Studies

opencancer's avataropencancer

High in protein and low in fat, poultry has always been a great source of nutrition for people of all ages. However, a significant number of chicken processing plants nationwide involve a high concentration of new chemicals in production. The Open Cancer Network reveals the potential cancer hazards of these chemicals, which shouldn’t be underestimated by consumers.

In a recent Washington Post article, Kimberly Kindy wrote about the dangers of newly sped up chicken processing plants. In order to achieve greater productivity, the chickens are sprayed with a cocktail of bacteria-killing chemicals in greater and greater quantities.

The main danger stems from the fact that new, stronger antibacterial chemicals, in conjunction with an older testing regimen, may not reduce the rate of bacterial contamination but rather mask it. As a result, USDA may no longer have a complete picture of contamination levels in the poultry supply chain.

However…
